CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The 10th Anniversary ISIM Festival/Conference in collaboration with Jeonju International Sori Festival, South Korea
September 27-October 2, 2016
The International Society for Improvised Music (ISIM) is happy to announce that its 10th Anniversary special event will take place in Korea, hosted by Jeonju International Sori Festival 2016 (전주세계소리축제) in Jeonju province, South Korea. ISIM will collaborate with the International Sori Festival for an evening performance in addition to three days of workshops and a seminar. We look forward to our fourth Cross-cultural Improvisation Workshop and Performance after highly successful prior events in New York and Ann Arbor. The upcoming event will take place in Korea with one of the world’s most vibrant cultural scenes and the foremost improvised music festival in East Asia.
In a celebration of ISIM 10th Anniversary, ISIM and the Sori Festival will collaboratively program workshops, seminar and performance including outstanding Korean improvisers. The event will build upon the Sori Festival’s fifteen years history of successfully promoting improvised music. The event will bring together musicians, teachers, scholars, promoters, and listeners who are interested in exploring the many facets of cross-cultural musical creativity. For this special event, we invite you to seize the opportunity to create new connections, share knowledge, participate in dialogues and create new music together with world-class devotees of the art of improvisation from the globe. This event is focused on collaboration rather than presenting your own group. During the festival the selected ISIM performers will also join the workshops with leading Korean musicians including Wonil (piri) and Kang Eunil (haegum).
Program Director Jin Hi Kim is closely working on the event programs with Sori Festival Director and the planning committee from both ISIM and Korea. Currently she is organizing an additional seminar in Seoul, which will be co-presented with World Music Center and Korean Society for World Music. ISIM members will meet in Seoul first and travel to Jeonju together.
ISIM invites proposals for a total of twenty people to perform and participate in workshops at Jeonju International Sori Festival. The planning committee will review the proposals with an initial selection of 40 people. The final selection of twenty will be based on discussions with the Sori Festival about instrumentation and technical requirements. The final 20 people will be invited to go to Korea and participate in both the concert and workshop.
In addition scholars will be invited to seminars with themes, Cross-cultural Improvisation Implying Korean music, Creativity through Improvisation, Music Education of the Future, and New Perception of World Music.
Proposals are welcome from current and new ISIM members, including those who join or renew their membership concurrent with the proposal submission deadline. Proposals will not be considered from applicants whose membership is not current.
