CfP – Unconventional Approaches to Performance, Composition and Research
The 2nd edition of the international interdisciplinary conference The 21st Century Guitar will be hosted from November 2-5, 2020 by the Centre for the Study of the Sociology and Aesthetics of Music (CESEM) of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (NOVA FCSH) in collaboration with the International Guitar Research Centre (IGRC, University of Surrey) and the Canadian Music Centre. It will take place in the Colégio Almada Negreiros at NOVA’s Campolide Campus.
The goal of this edition is to bring together academics, composers and performers from different fields who are interested in unconventional approaches to guitar research, sound production, composition, performance and pedagogy.
21st Century Guitar seeks contributions on any type of guitar and style under one or more of the following topics:
Unconventional performing techniques
Unconventional compositional approaches
Unconventional/New instruments and instrument designs
Unconventional approaches to current or historical Improvisation
Acoustics and physical modelling
Unconventional approaches to guitar pedagogy
Unconventional in musicological or historical research
Phenomenological aspects of guitar performance
Unconventional artistic research approaches
Empirical research in guitar skill acquisition and performance (motor learning, cognition, psychology, embodied cognition, biomechanics)
Lecture (20 min. presentation + 10 min. questions)
Lecture-recital (35 min. presentation + 10 min. questions)
Poster (10 min. presentation + 10 min. questions)
Please submit a 350-word abstract including purpose, literature review, methodology, findings (final or preliminary).
All proposals will be blind-reviewed by a panel of experts. Do not include the author(s)’s name or other identifying details in the proposal. Attach the proposal as a PDF file to an email that includes the author(s)’s name, academic affiliation (if any), short bio, email address, website and preferred presentation form. Please note that the final contribution format will be decided by the organizers according to the nature and number of accepted contributions, as parallel sessions are not intended. Poster proposals are highly encouraged, however, the organization will not cover the printing costs of the posters.

Following the conference, presenters may submit papers to the conference proceedings, which will be peer-reviewed and published online. The deadline for submission will be announced at a later stage together with the guidelines. We expect to publish the proceedings no later than October, 2021.
