Call for Two-year Mitacs Postdoctoral Fellow (based at the University of Regina, Canada)

Closing Date January 15, 2018

Applicants may be international, Permanent Resident or Canadian Citizen and must be within 4.5 years of PhD

Applications are invited for an early career Postdoctoral Research Fellowship to undertake up to 2 years dedicated research in the VOICE Lab, University of Regina Canada situated in the Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance. The program is intended to foster a high-potential researcher who has already demonstrated excellence in terms of nationally and internationally competitive achievements in the early stages of his/her professional careers. Submission deadline is January 15, 2018.

The VOICE Lab (Vocally Oriented Investigations in Creative Expression) connects voice, arts practice, & technology, with a view to providing creative possibilities for people with complex vocal disabilities. In this research (Voicing, Finding Voice, Giving Voice to the Vocally Challenged), we want to address a gap in existing vocal research in Canada by expanding the scientific/medical model to include creative self-expression beyond the bare minimum of rehabilitation and therapy. A community-based project, the VOICE Lab will use available digital software that measures and records vocal sound to launch artistic creation and to support, augment and extend voice, build community and enhance public awareness about who speaks, and who doesn’t.This research will mobilize knowledge through: 1) the public dissemination of art/performance; 2) skills training for the vocally challenged; 3) conventional journal articles and conferences. The ideal candidate will engage in ground-breaking research, based in arts practice, emerging creative technologies, and assistive technology. He/she will have experience working with vocally challenged individuals or with those with complex disAbilties. Experimental and somatic expertise will be considered favorably. We encourage those who identify as disAbled to apply.

The Fellow’s program is expected to involve original empirical inquiry (qualitative and quantitative), methodological rigor and conceptual innovation, set within a detailed knowledge of relevant existing research and scholarship on vocal augmentation, assistive technologies and vocally challenged individuals. The expectation is that the Fellow will publish outputs from this research in the relevant literature, as well as seeking additional research grant funding, and taking seriously the possibilities for achieving ‘impact’ beyond the academy.

Eligibility: Applicants must have obtained a PhD within the preceding 4.5 years; they must be demonstrably involved in voice training/augmentation and working with individuals with complex physical disorders, with a credible program of research and scholarship.
Requirements: Working with a supervisor, the post doc will assist in set up the VOICE lab and establishing a personal research agenda that aligns with the mandate of the major research partner, Astonished! Inc.
