What happens when radio is considered a creative space similar to a laboratory, studio or venue, supporting expression and experimentation?
 
The Plain A.I.R. artist-in-residence this month is Michael Waterman. Michael Waterman is a visual and audio artist whose work focuses on sound installation, improvisational performance, and experimental radio art.  For the past 22 years, Waterman has hosted the weekly collaborative radio show, The Mannlicher Carcano Radio Hour, regularly connecting participants from up to 12 cities across North America and Europe. Tune in every Saturday in April from 3-4pm CST to listen to his month-long radio show!
 
About Michael Waterman:
Michael Waterman is a visual and audio artist whose work focuses on sound installation, improvisational performance, and experimental radio art. He is especially interested in performance on found objects and altered electronics which he fashions into unique musical instruments. He has presented his sound installations and performed extensively in museums and festivals across Canada, the United States, and in telematic performances globally. Waterman is a founding member of a number of sound art collaborations most notably, his audio collage ensemble Mannlicher Carcano who have explored a range of recorded, performance, and transmission contexts over their 30-year history. For the past 22 years, Waterman has hosted the weekly collaborative radio show, The Mannlicher Carcano Radio Hour, regularly connecting participants from up to 12 cities across North America and Europe. In recent years, he has been exploring the creative potential of off-grid pirate radio installations.
In 2019, Waterman moved to Ottawa, Ontario from St. John’s, Newfoundland where he had been living since 2010.
About Mannlicher Carcano:
Mannlicher Carcano is an experimental, improvisational audio collage group who have been working together since 1987, creating performances, recordings, installations, and radio art. They produce a weekly radio and web-cast, The Mannlicher Carcano Radio Hour. The group has released over 50 cassettes, CDs, CDRs, and vinyl recordings, and archived hundreds of mp3 radio transcriptions.

 Plain A.I.R. is an artist-in-residence radio program that airs on 91.3FM CJTR, Regina’s community radio station. Each month the program features a different local artist, DJ, musician, band or community member as a guest host who programs a month’s worth of live, weekly radio shows. The program airs Saturday afternoons from 3 to 4 p.m. between January and June (Season 1) and September and December (Season 2) in 2020.
