IASPM Pop Talks 2 with Chris Tonelli
January 27, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
Chris Tonelli Voices Found: Free Jazz and Singing & Kristin McGee Remixing European Jazz Culture
with performances and talks by Fabian Holt, Kristin McGee, Susanne Alt, Stefan Leisering, Carey West, Chris Tonelli, and Paul Dutton
Presented by IASPM Benelux
Wednesday, January 27th, 11 AM – 1 PM EST
As part of their Pop Talks colloquium series, IASPM Benelux will present a live double book launch to celebrate new works by IICSI Research Associate Dr. Chris Tonelli, and former IASPM Chair Dr. Kristin McGee.
Tonelli’s book, Voices Found: Free Jazz and Singing, studies the formation of free jazz voice, mapping its development from 1950s sound poetry and scat to contemporary free jazz choirs. From interviews with key figures in free jazz voice, he develops a theory of how audiences experience and evaluate “unconventional vocal sounds,” explaining that even those who are used to dissonant instrumental free jazz will often shy away from human voices making sounds they perceive to be “not-Human.”
McGee’s book, Remixing European Jazz Culture, examines the rise of live remixing in the jazz scenes of major European cities during the 1990s. By bringing studio tools into live performance, these musicians developed “internationally recognised hybrid jazz styles.” McGee explores their work, and how they have “expanded the plane of jazz’s continued prosperity, popularity, and revitalisation in the twenty-first century.”
IICSI PhD student Carey West will comment on Voices Found, while Dr. Fabian Holt will comment on Remixing European Jazz Culture. Musicians discussed in the books will also offer comments and performances, including Susanne Alt, Stefan Leisering, and Paul Dutton.
