Brent Lee : Musical Improvisation within Audiovisual Installations: Recent Work at the Noiseborder Multimedia Performance Lab
Research-creation work at the Noiseborder Multimedia Performance Lab (NMPL) at the University of Windsor has been focused on the development of new strategies for musical interaction with audiovisual installations. Building on co-director SigiTorinus’ extensive work in the medium of installation art, recent projects have incorporated conceptual and technical approaches sound-image interaction developed for multimedia performances by the Noiseborder Ensemble over the last ten years. Brent Lee’s This is an important message for Julie Wade (2014-16) and Natural Planes of Separation (2016) exist both as projection-based installations and as performance environments for improvising musicians. Ex Vitro is a project in development for installation in Germany in 2018; this work involves interactive vocal improvisation within an array of glass objects that serve both as projection surfaces and loudspeakers.
This presentation will describe the evolution of thinking around these projects and the challenges involved.
