IICSI is launching new MA and PhD graduate programs in Critical Studies in Improvisation, at the University of Guelph!

Join our Community of Improvisers!

Our new MA (2 years) and PhD (4 years) programs will appeal to prospective students interested in improvisatory practices, arts-based practices for community change, interdisciplinary approaches, and community engagement. All students will complete coursework exploring core concepts, research methods, and arts-based community engagement, as well as an independent research project. PhD students will also complete two qualifying exams: one focused on critical studies in improvisation, and another in a secondary area of disciplinary expertise. Funding may be available in the form of stipends, teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and internships with community partners.

Hosted at the University of Guelph, the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation is a partnered research institute. Our mandate is to create positive social change through the confluence of improvisational arts, innovative scholarship, and collaborative action. Our team engages, connects, and mobilizes scholars, students, creative practitioners, and community partners in order to create a vibrant intellectual hub, and a focal point for leading-edge research and critical inquiry in the field of improvisation studies.
