An Improvised Curtain-Raiser at #EMWF2019

The IICSI is delighted to present a reading and improvised musical performance that will pay tribute to artistic freedom and collaboration for the opening event of the Eden Mills Writer’s Festival:  In Conversation: Marina Endicott and Guy Gavriel Kay  happening September 6, 2019 at the Guelph Arboretum.  Garry Thomas Morse will read “high octane poems with a fast rhythm” from his new book of poetry, Safety Sand, while Matt Brubeck improvises on cello.

Expect a strange kind of beauty.

Both Garry and Matt are celebrated artists in their own fields.  Garry was the 2019 Carol Shields’ Writer-in-Residence at the University of Winnipeg and the 2018 Jack McClelland Writer-in-Residence at the University of Toronto.

A writer of Kwakwaka’wakw heritage, he grew up on the BC coast. Both on the page and in performance, his writing is disciplined and agile, serious and subversive, personal and political. He has published several collections of poetry, including Discovery Passages, shortlisted for the Governor General’s Award and the Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize, and Prairie Harbour, a long poem based on his year of living in Saskatchewan, also shortlisted for a Governor General’s Award. His new collection, Safety Sand (Talonbooks), rooted in Winnipeg, is a celebration of prairie surrealism. His fiction is as adventurous as his poetry, challenging both genre and voice. Morse makes his home in Winnipeg.

Matt Brubeck is a JUNO award-winning performer/composer whose primary instrument is the cello. Raised on jazz and classically trained at Yale, Matt is at ease in multiple genres and enjoys taking his cello improvisation skills into diverse musical territories. Matt has collaborated with more artists than he can remember. His many eclectic musical adventures include touring and/or recording with Tom Waits, Dixie Chicks, Natalie McMaster, and Yo-Yo Ma. Matt is also on the music faculty at York University and Humber College, where he teaches jazz, improvisation, composition, and leads various ensembles.

Tickets for In Conversation: Marina Endicott and Guy Gavriel Kay, featuring a special appearance by Garry Thomas Morse and Matt Brubeck are available from ShowPass.com
