Healthy Cities

This project, based at McGill University, uses an interdisciplinary approach to identify the elements of urban living that put adolescents at increased risk for developing schizophrenia. Investigating both neurological and psychosocial factors, the study also investigates the impacts of built environments on youth well-being. The team, led by Professor Suparna Choudhury in collaboration with IICSI researchers Daniel Weinstock and Ian Gold, is currently carrying out an initial study of the effects of significant disruption in the urban landscape – in this case, the construction of the McGill University Health Centre in the Glen Yards area of Montreal, a project which has generated significant debate and disagreement about site selection, access, and community impacts.
