Dionne Brand is a renowned poet, novelist, and essayist who presently holds a University Research Chair at the University of Guelph. Her writing is notable for the beauty of its language, and for its intense engagement with issues of social justice, including particularly issues of gender and race. Best known for her poetry, she has also achieved great distinction and acclaim in fiction and non-fiction. Over her career she has won the Governor General´s Literary Award for Poetry, the Pat Lowther Award, The Trillium Award for Literature and the Toronto Book Award.
