Ric Knowles is a dramaturge, director, scholar, editor, and Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph.

As a dramaturge and director Ric has worked for 30 years at theatres ranging from Mulgrave Road through Necessary Angel, Tarragon, Factory, Buddies in Bad Times, fu-GEN, Carlos Bulosan, and theatre gargantua to the Stratford Festival. Most recently he was dramaturgical consultant for Modern Times’ Hallaj at Buddies in Bad Times, and dramaturge for the MT Space’s Body 13 at the IMPACT 11 Festival and Theatre Passe Muraile, Monique Mojica’s Chocolate Woman Dreams the Milky Way for the Chocolate Woman Collective and Native Earth Performing Arts, Diana Tso’s Red Snow for the Red Snow Collective at Theatre Passe Muraille, Flerida Peña’s Sister Mary’s a Dyke?!  and Jovanni Sy’s Dora-nominated A Taste of Empire for Cahoots Theatre Company. He is currently working on new play development projects with Cahoots and the Chocolate Woman Collective.

As a scholar Ric is editor of Theatre Journal, former editor of Modern Drama and Canadian Theatre Review, and the award-winning author of six and editor of ten books and two book series on theatre and performance. He was the founding President of Playwrights Canada Press, and currently sits on six editorial boards internationally. In 2013-14 Ric will be Research Fellow at the international Research Centre, “Interweaving Performance Cultures,” at the Freie Universität Berlin.
