Colloquium: IICSI and Coastal Jazz & Blues Society: Breathturns: Improvisation and Freedom, Vancouver BC
June 25, 2016 - June 26, 2016Free
The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation and Coastal Jazz & Blues Society’s eighth colloquium, titled Breathturns: Improvisation and Freedom. This two-day academic symposium takes place during the opening weekend of the TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival at the downtown campus of the University of British Columbia, and will feature presentations from artists, performers, scholars and community members – with keynotes by musicians performing at the Festival, including world-renowned improvisers Evan Parker, Georg Graewe, Ayelet Rose Gottleib and Tommy Babin. This year, the colloquium will focus on the relationships between improvisation and freedom. How do improvisational practices in the arts challenge our limits? How do liberation and spontaneity intersect? How do collective actions negotiate with individualities?
Breathturns: Improvisation and Freedom is free and open to the public.
