How could the inhabiting of the here and now be a revolutionary act? If history is a musical score of modernity or a play script of colonial conquest\, how can improvisation be a radical act of decoloniality? \nThis workshop explores how ‘presence’ constitutes aesthetic experience\, and how the aesthetic reshifts how we compose or order the world. In understanding our movements\, mobilities\, and presences within social\, geographical\, and historical spaces\, how might our improvisation radically shift history?  Parousia\, according to philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer is the state of absolute presence—the timelessness of an experience despite and within its multiple repetitions in art and performance. In suspending time through parousia\, how can we decolonize fixed scores and deterministic dramaturgies to improvise and migrate our present to new futures? \nMORE ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS \nMELÊ YAMOMO\nmeLê yamomo lived in Lucena City\, Los Baños\, Metro Manila\, Seoul\, Bangkok\, Warwick\, and Munich\, and now inhabits Amsterdam and Berlin researching\, teaching\, and creating performance/theatre and sound/music. He is Assistant Professor of Performances Studies\, Sound Studies\, Artistic Research and Decoloniality at the University of Amsterdam\, the author of Sounding Modernities: Theatre and Music in Manila and the Asia Pacific\, 1869-1946 (Palgrave Macmillan\, 2018)\, and project leader and principal investigator of the projects »Sonic Entanglements« and Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives (DeCoSEAS). meLê is resident artist at Theater Ballhaus Naunynstrasse where his creations Echoing Europe\, sonus\, and Forces of Overtones are on repertoire. meLê also curates the Decolonial Frequences Festival and hosts the Sonic Entanglements podcast. \nTEILHARD PARADELA\n\nTeilhard Paradela (they/them) works as a policy maker\, community leader\, historian\, archivist\, and dramaturge. They immigrated from the Philippines to Canada\, where they settled (uninvited)\, studied\, worked\, and grew up in the unceded\, ancestral\, and traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish\, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations\, otherwise known as Vancouver\, British Columbia.

He completed his BFA degree in Creative Writing and Drama at the University of British Columbia and went to the University of Amsterdam and the University of Tampere for his MA degree in International Performance Research. He is currently writing his PhD dissertation on how the media during the Marcos regime in the Philippines imagined and constituted the masses as actors and spectators in both the political and the theatrical sense.

DESCRIPTION:Thinking Spaces: The Improvisation Reading Group and Speaker Series is pleased to present “Improvising the Archive: Medea Electronique’s Archive of Digital Art\,” a talk by Eric Lewis. This event will take place on Wednesday\, November 16 at 1pm (ET) in person (The IICSI House\, 9 University Avenue E.\, University of Guelph) as well as streamed online (via Zoom). A moderated Q&A will follow the talk. A Zoom link will be sent to your email the day before the event. \nMORE ABOUT THIS TALK: \nEric will discuss assorted ways the digital domain opens up archives for more improvisatory ways of interacting with their contents\, and will describe the Medea Electronique archive\, and the thinking behind the recent project by co-authored by Eric called From Fruit to Root\, concerning this archive\, and theories concerning interactive archive and improvisational archive theory. \nMORE ABOUT OUR SPEAKER: \nEric Lewis is a professor of Philosophy at McGill University\, who specializes in the philosophy of improvisatory arts. He is also the President of AIM (Arts in the Margins)\, the Director of LUC (Laboratory of Urban Culture)\, and sits on the managment committee of IICSI. He is a member of Medea Electronique\, and an active improvisor on brass and electronics.

DESCRIPTION:Former chair of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) Douglas R. Ewart (reeds) is the current IICSI/Musagetes improviser-in-residence. Mr. Ewart is a versatile composer\, improviser\, sculptor and maker of masks and instruments\, educator\, lecturer\, and all around visionary. In projects done in diverse media throughout an award-winning and widely acclaimed 40-year career\, he has woven his remarkably broad gifts into a single sensibility that encourages and celebrates the wholeness of individuals in culturally active communities.
