Dr. An Kosurko defended her PhD in Social Sciences at the University of Helsinki in May 2025. An interdisciplinary interaction researcher and MITACS Postdoctoral Fellow in the University of Guelph’s Department of Sociology and Anthropology and IICSI, An takes an ethnomethodological approach to understanding what kinds of creative resources are available in the moment to facilitate interaction in reconnecting the disconnected.
An’s current project, “Improvising with Dementia to support everyday spontaneity to support caring relationships,” is based at the Improv Lab and with Musagetes. This research explores everyday spontaneity in interaction to support caring relationships with people who live with dementia. This arts-based project will bring together people in caring relationships who live with dementia to seek deeper understanding of our moment-to-moment interactions and how we adapt to change with each other socially. Dr. Kosurko will work together in partnership with artists and researchers from IICSI and Musagetes networks to create and adapt arts-based workshops and exercises (music, dance, theatre, and visual arts). An predicts that conversations will unfold in many forms of talk and embodiment in creative interactional spaces—collectively and collaboratively.
