Please join us on Tuesday, March 4 at 12:00 PM (ET) for Thinking Spaces: “Acoustic Innovation: Is There Anything Left to Invent?” with Fron Reilly—“Is there still room for Innovative Design in the field of purely acoustic musical instruments in an age of digitization?”
This presentation will take place in person at ImprovLab, MCKN 108 at the University of Guelph. As always, our Thinking Spaces events are free!

My talk will basically tell the story of four innovative acoustic musical instruments that I have created over the past few years. I will focus on the creative process in which I access my lifelong fascination with sound and delve into my background in physics to invent new ways of connecting the vibrations of strings to the human ear and brain.
Fron Reilly is a maker, designer, builder, and inventor living in Guelph. He holds a BSc in physics from the University of Waterloo. Now retired, he has worked in many fields including teaching, industrial automation, and electronic transformer design. In addition, he has always been and remains busy in his workshop creating things that work, including wooden sculptural clock mechanisms, kinetic sculptures, sundials, stirling engines, and musical instruments. If you’d like to learn more about his work, or see some of his instruments in action, Fron’s YouTube channel (@fronreilly4787), is mostly devoted to his musical adventures and has garnered millions of views online.”
In his talk, Fron will demonstrate his latest musical instrument, the fron2, and tell the story of its creation. He will also delve into the acoustics of how it produces its unique sound and how that sound differs in interesting ways from electronically generated sounds. Afterward, audience members will be invited to participate in a live improv session. Bring your instrument!
