CALL FOR PARTICIPATION – “That’s Just Indians Being Indians”
In his role as 2017 Improviser-in-Residence, Kade L. Twist is recruiting participants for a project tentatively titled “That’s Just Indians Being Indians.” The Improviser-in-Residence program strives to bring improvising musicians into meaningful contact with the local community, and is a collaborative partnership between the International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) and Musagetes.
This project seeks to bring participants of Indigenous and Indian backgrounds together, to collaborate on a generative, socially-engaged sound piece. This is an open call, seeking three Indian performers/participants (South-East Asian Indian) and three Indigenous performers/participants (North American Indigenous). The group will generate a word bank to use in performance, with voice acting as the primary instrument. Performers should be comfortable and confident singers. Using this word bank, conducting, and negotiation, this project will conclude with a final performance, where participants will work collectively in shifting formations to improvise poems in real time.
The commitment will include approximately 10 hours of time (3 workshops of 2-3 hours each and a final performance of approximately 30 minutes) during the week of December 3rd-9th. Performers will receive a $500 honorarium for their participation.

2017 Improviser-in-Residence Kade L. Twist is a poet and interdisciplinary artist working with video, sound, interactive media, text, and installation environments. Twist’s work combines re-imagined tribal stories with geopolitical narratives to examine the unresolved tensions between market-driven systems, consumerism, and American Indian cultural self-determination. Mr. Twist is a co-founder of Postcommodity, an interdisciplinary artist collective. With his individual work and the collective Postcommodity, Twist has exhibited work nationally and internationally. In 2017 Postcommodity was included in both the Whitney Biennial and documenta 14. Mr. Twist is a US Artist Klein Fellow for Visual Arts, and Postcommodity have been the recipients of grants and fellowships from the Harpo Foundation, Joan Mitchell Foundation, Art Matters, Creative Capital, the Native Arts and Cultures Foundation and the Ford Foundation. Mr. Twist is an Associate Professor of Art and Social Practice at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles, CA.
