david lee Congratulations to David Lee!

Please join the IICSI in offering our hearty congratulations to David Lee on his successful PhD defence on June 14, 2017!

David has been working extensively with IICSI while completing his PhD in Literary Studies and Theatre Studies in English at the University of Guelph, and his dissertation focusses on the history of improvised music in Toronto. As a double bassist, David has been active for over three decades in jazz and improvised music, as well as working with poets, actors, and dancers. His Phantom Hunter trio with guitarist Chris Palmer and saxophonist Connor Bennett has been praised by Stuart Broomer in The Whole Note as “a subtly interactive chamber ensemble that spontaneously integrates novel tones and textures into fresh music.” His books include Stopping Time: Paul Bley and the Transformation of Jazz and The Battle of the Five Spot: Ornette Coleman and the New York Jazz Field, as well as the award-winning Chainsaws: A History, the literary novel Commander Zero, and his recent Lovecraftian YA novel, The Midnight Games.

We all wish you the very best, David, in your future academic and creative endeavours!
