Job Posting: Music & Technical Production Coordinator

The International Institute for the Critical Studies of Improvisation (IICSI) and the School of Fine Art and Music (SOFAM) is seeking a qualified technician to provide technical production and coordination for the new ImprovLab research and performance facility, the Digital Music Lab, and in the Arts Research Centre (ARC).  Additional support and expertise may be provided to other areas within the College of Arts, specifically in the ARC such as events, theatre, and other performances.

The successful candidate will have experience in sound and lighting production, digital music, livestreaming, and telematics to ensure the successful execution of research and artistic programming in the Arts Research Centre (ARC). While the position primarily oversees and facilitates production at ImprovLab (located within the ARC), it also supports the delivery of the Digital Music curriculum (in the fall and winter semesters) by overseeing the ARC’s Digital Music Lab, and helps coordinate all performances and rehearsals of musical and choral performances in the ARC year-round.

The position works not only to establish and maintain a high quality of production, but also to realize the artistic vision of the ImprovLab and ARC users. It is important, therefore, that the position communicates regularly and effectively with the staff at IICSI, SOFAM, other University researchers, University IT Services, and the staff at community organizations who are using these spaces.

Requirements of the position include:

• While a variety of combinations of education and experience are valued, the minimum requirements are a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music or a degree/certificate in a related field (such as production or sound engineering) and a minimum of three (3) years of previous experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Experience in a professional theatre or music venue setting, supervising live events.
• Experience in an academic setting supporting the delivery of courses in music under the direction of faculty and the ability to mentor and assist music students in all aspects of digital music.
• Ability to use, manage and maintain music equipment and software within a digital music lab (e.g. Logic Pro, GarageBand, Ableton Live, Audacity and other music editors, mastering and effect plugins, keyboard controllers, microphones, recorders, mixers, etc.)
• Ability to provide technical demonstrations.
• Proven ability to excel within a small working group and act as an effective team member of a large and diverse organization.
• Demonstrated ability to interface with coworkers, students, and University stakeholders in an equitable and accessible manner to contribute to a culture of inclusion and respect.
• Excellent personal judgment, organizational skills, and problem-solving ability to multitask and prioritize duties while dealing with interruptions and competing deadlines
• Ability to take initiative to pro-actively identify potential problems or outstanding tasks, prepare required supporting information, make recommendations, and implement solutions to ensure smooth operations within the Digital Music Lab, ImprovLab, and the ARC
• Managing the set-up, run, and takedown of activities in the ImprovLab
• Serving as the central point of contact for all technical matters related to ImprovLab; communicating details of production needs with users, including coordinating stage positioning and layout; managing artists’ technical riders and attempting to accommodate all requests; and communicating artists’ technical requests to stage crews and assistant production staff with a view to implementing them in a coordinated manner
• Performing and supervising all work done in the ImprovLab, including guiding other production employees and monitoring production quality and ensuring that all activities in these spaces are carried out according to accepted practices and standards of safety (e.g. that sound pressure level peaks never exceed 101dB)
• Mapping out and coordinating sequences of ordering and arrival on site for any research activities or events
• Ordering equipment and supplies for the ImprovLab space as needed in consultation with the researchers or community groups using the space
• Developing timetables with the user(s), stage manager(s), and other relevant personnel to ensure deadlines are met
• Attending monthly meetings with IICSI personnel
• Submitting an annual report to IICSI
