University of Guelph
Dr. Judi McCuaig received her PhD from the University of Saskatchewan in 2000. Between 2000 and 2004, McCuaig worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington. She joined the School of Computer Science at the University of Guelph in 2004 where she is now an Associate Professor. McCuaig’s first career was as a public-school teacher in Saskatchewan where she taught K-8 for 10 years.
McCuaig’s research is focused on using computer systems to improve learner engagement in post-secondary education. She uses techniques such as data mining, intelligent software systems, personalization, and user modelling to develop effective learning tools that encourage self-regulation and independent learning. Key areas of focus include:
- Role of formative feedback. Formative feedback helps learners self-assess and identify the concepts and skills that require additional focus. This kind of feedback is often automated. McCuaig explores the role of automated formative feedback in the success, satisfaction, and engagement of learners.
- Automated problem-solving skills tutor. Problem solving begins with the ability to decompose large tasks into smaller tasks. McCuaig explores the efficacy of conversational agents in helping learners learn to decompose tasks.
