PhD, Ethnomusicology, UBC
Julia is a vocalist and actress who is currently a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at the UBC School of Music and a Killam Doctoral Fellow, as well as a participant in the Public Scholars Initiative. Julia spent the summer doing research and performing in Moravia and the Czech republic, along with her husband-collaborator, guitarist Aram Bajakian. On October 15, 2016, Julia gave the fourth and summative workshop, “Affect, Vibration and the Architecture of Sound,” at China Cloud, an arts space on the Downtown East Side. The workshop was recorded by a professional videographer, and the resulting video will be uploaded to the UBC-IICSI archive at cIRcle, the university’s open-access institutional repository. Dalava also issued their second recording, “The Book of Transfigurations,” as a compact disc on the Songlines label, which included material developed in the IICSI workshops. Julia’s are hybrids of creative performance and critical discussion, experiments, in a variety of forms and spaces, in practice-based research.
