The International Institute for Critical Studies in Improvisation (IICSI) invites applications for one (1) twelve-month residential postdoctoral fellowship position to be held at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.
IICSI’s mandate is to create positive social change through the confluence of improvisational arts, innovative scholarship, and collaborative action. IICSI is a multi-locale research partnership hosted at the University of Guelph, with sites at McGill University; Memorial University of Newfoundland; University of British Columbia; University of Regina; Carleton University; 17, Institute of Critical Studies (Mexico City); and Queen’s University Belfast. The Institute seeks to contribute to interdisciplinary research and graduate training in the expanding multidisciplinary field of improvisation studies.
Duration and Compensation
Valued at $58,000 CAD (not inclusive of benefits), this twelve-month residential postdoctoral fellowship is for September 2026 to August 2027. It is intended for recent PhD graduates who are undertaking original academic work, disseminating research findings, and seeking to expand their professional networks. In addition, the College of Arts at the University of Guelph will provide an annual research stipend of $2,500 CAD to the successful candidate.
Note that a teaching offer may also be made to the postdoctoral fellow, contingent on the candidate’s areas of expertise, budgetary restrictions, and the needs of the IMPR graduate program. If such an offer is accepted by the candidate, a teaching stipend (approximately $8,000 CAD) will be added to the candidate’s annual salary.
Location of Appointment
The successful candidate will be expected to spend at least three days per week on campus at the University of Guelph to facilitate social, cultural, and intellectual engagement.
Application Criteria
Applicants are invited to submit research proposals focusing on the social implications (broadly construed) of improvised artistic practices. The successful candidate will be chosen based on a rigorous application process, with IICSI’s management team serving as the selection committee.
Criteria for selection are the quality and originality of the proposed research, the fit with the Institute’s overall mandate and objectives, the candidate’s record of scholarly achievement, and the candidate’s potential to benefit from activities associated with IICSI, which may include the use of ImprovLab, the Institute’s state-of-the-art research and performance venue.
The postdoctoral fellow will be eligible for competitive research stipends; logistical assistance for relocation (if required); office space equipped with computers; access to the services of the host institution (library, etc.); and administrative, placement, and research assistance as needed. In return, the fellow is expected to pursue the research project submitted in their application, to participate in the Institute’s research and community-engaged activities (colloquia, seminars, partnered projects), and to present their work in progress in the context of the Institute’s seminars and workshops.
Note that applicants should have completed their PhDs by the start date of the fellowship (received after June 1, 2021*; or to be conferred by September 1, 2026).
Applicants who received their PhDs prior to 2021 and who had their careers interrupted for extenuating circumstances are encouraged to submit an application with justifications attached to their research statements.

• A curriculum vitae (no longer than eight pages).
• A 1,500-word research statement describing the proposed project.
• A 250-word Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion statement.
• Indication of language proficiencies.
• One scholarly publication or research/creation output produced in the last three years.
• Graduate transcripts (unofficial transcripts accepted).
The applicant’s two referees must email their confidential letters of reference directly to IICSI by the deadline.

IICSI a pour mandat de créer des changements sociaux positifs par le truchement des arts de l’improvisation, de la recherche innovante et de l’action collaborative. Établie à l’Université de Guelph, l’Institut est un partenariat de recherche regroupant plusieurs sites : notamment l’Université McGill ; l’Université Memorial de Terre-Neuve ; l’Université de Colombie-Britannique ; l’Université de Regina ; l’Université Carleton ; 17, l’Institut d’études critiques de Mexico ; et l’Université Queen’s de Belfast. IICSI vise le développement de connaissances interdisciplinaires et la formation aux cycles supérieurs dans le domaine multidisciplinaire en expansion des études sur l’improvisation.
Durée et valeur
D’une valeur de 58,000 CAD (avant bénéfices marginaux), cette bourse postdoctorale (en résidence) de douze mois s’étend de septembre 2026 à août 2027. Elle est destinée aux récents titulaires d’un doctorat qui entreprennent des travaux universitaires originaux, partagent des résultats de recherche novateurs et cherchent à élargir leurs réseaux professionnels. En outre, le Collège des Arts de l’Université de Guelph fournira une allocation de recherche annuelle de 2,500 CAD au candidat retenu.
Notez qu’une charge de cours peut également être offerte au boursier postdoctoral, en fonction des domaines d’expertise du candidat, des restrictions budgétaires et des besoins du programme d’études de troisième cycle IMPR. Si une telle offre est acceptée par le candidat, une allocation d’enseignement (environs 8,000 CAD) sera ajoutée au salaire annuel du candidat.
Lieu d’affectation
Le candidat retenu devra passer un minimum de trois jours par semaine sur le campus de l’Université de Guelph afin de contribuer au développement de l’engagement social, culturel et intellectuel.
Critères de sélection
Les candidats sont invités à soumettre une proposition de recherche axée sur la portée sociale (au sens large) des pratiques artistiques improvisées. Le candidat retenu sera sélectionné sur la base d’un processus de candidature rigoureux, l’équipe de direction de l’IICSI agissant en tant que comité de sélection.
Les critères de sélection sont la qualité et l’originalité de la recherche proposée, la pertinence de celle-ci en ce qui concerne le mandat et les objectifs généraux de notre Institut, les réalisations savantes du candidat et le potentiel du candidat à tirer profit des activités associées à l’IICSI ; ce qui peut comprendre l’utilisation de l’ImprovLab, notre espace de recherche et de performance à la pointe de la technologie.
Le postdoctorant pourra bénéficier d’une allocation de recherche compétitive, d’une aide logistique à la relocalisation (si nécessaire), d’un bureau équipé d’ordinateurs, d’un accès aux services de l’institution d’accueil (bibliothèque, etc.) et d’une assistance administrative, de placement et de recherche selon les besoins. En retour, le boursier devra poursuivre le projet de recherche soumis dans sa candidature, participer aux activités de recherche et d’engagement communautaire de l’Institut (colloques, séminaires, projets en partenariat) et présenter ses travaux en cours dans le cadre des séminaires et ateliers de l’Institut.
Les candidats doivent avoir complété un doctorat à la date correspondant au début de la résidence (reçu après le 1er juin 2021* ou devant être décerné avant le 1er septembre 2026).
Les candidats ayant obtenu leur doctorat avant 2021 et dont la carrière a été interrompue en raison de circonstances accablantes sont encouragés à soumettre leur candidature en joignant une justification à leur description du projet de recherche.
