…… this November’s American Studies Association Meeting in Chicago included a November 10 panel entitled “The AACM: Musical Dissent and Pedagogies of Possibility,” organized by IICSI student researcher Brian Lefresne. ….. enormously expensive business propositions (such as Hollywood films) do not often encourage improvisation, but the fall blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok has been praised by audiences and critics for breaking the mold by doing precisely that. In an online promotional video, the cast and director Taika Waikiki describe how on-set improvising helped them to play with and alter the superhero conventions….. professors Lian-Hee Wee, and Dr, Joanna Sio, of Hong Kong Baptist University, offer Improv Game Formats for the Classroom, using techniques of improv comedy to teach language and teamwork

kazoofest….. Kazoo! Fest, April 11-15th, 2018 in Guelph, Ontario is accepting music submissions for its 2018 festival until December 1st. They ask, “Please keep in mind, Kazoo! Fest is a curated festival. Due to the number of submissions we receive, we will only be able to respond to artists we are interested in booking. If you haven’t heard from us by mid-January, it’s unlikely that your submission has been selected. Artist applications are encouraged from people of colour, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities, women, queer and/or trans people”

….. The University of Victoria’s School of Music presented a lecture/presentation October 16 featuring UVic alumnus Klisala Harrison, who is currently Academy of Finland Research Scholar at the University of Helsinki. Dr. Harrison’s talk was entitled “How Music Can Help: Human Rights Deficits and Early Deaths in Urban Poverty,” and it was followed the next day by Toronto-based vocalists Tanya Tagaq and Christine Duncan, leading the UVic Chorus in an improvisation workshop
