Performances

When Rivers Meet was the culminating performance of Dong-Won Kim’s residency as Improviser-in-Residence (2014) that took place at the River Run Centre in Guelph, Ontario. It featured the Guelph Symphony Orchestra conducted by Judith Yan; the Guelph Youth Jazz Ensemble directed by Brent Rowan; musicians Jeff Bird, Daniel Fischlin, and Lewis Melville; dancer Georgia Simms; and storyteller Ben Grossman. A fully bilingual (English/Korean) 2-CD recording was released in October 2015 by Barcode Free Music and features large-scale group improvisations, traditional storytelling, intercultural musical forms, dance interludes, and even audience participation.

Other Stories: Sounding the Future was a workshop/improvised performance from the 2014 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium, featuring musicians Dong-Won Kim (2014 Improviser-in-Residence, South Korea), Dana Reason (Host), Ben Grossman (Guelph, ON), Matt Brubeck (Guelph, ON), Gary Diggins (Guelph, ON), and Paul Cram (Halifax, Nova Scotia).

One of three improvised musical performances co-presented by Musagetes, the Guelph Jazz Festival, and IICSI at the 2014 Guelph Jazz Festival. Postcommodity performed nine structured noise-songs from their (then), upcoming LP “We Lost Half The Forest, And The Rest Will Burn This Summer”, a 16-song concept album recounting the ever-cycling decay of a desert drought from the view of its flora and fauna.

At the 2014 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium, the Neelamjit Dhillon Quartet (BC) presented the The Komagata Maru Project as a workshop/performance.

During the 2014 Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium Cauleen Smith presented “Black Utopia LP – A Cauleen Smith Movie” as a keynote address. “Black Utopia LP – A Cauleen Smith Movie” is a double vinyl LP accompanied by 35mm slides synchronized in a live cinematic performance.

The International Society for Improvised Music (ISIM) hosted the panel discussion, AACM: The Next Fifty Years with active AACM members Douglas R. Ewart, Ann E. Ward and Khari B. The panel was moderated by Brian Lefresne and the panel was concluded with an improvised performance.
